Whenever I tell my family we are having homemade breadsticks for dinner, they get so excited.
This recipe is one of their favorites!
It does take some time, but the taste is absolutely worth it. If you’ve never worked with yeast before, I’ll share the tips you need to know.

Ingredients for Breadsticks:
- 1 1/4cups of warm water (100-100 degrees)
- 1 Tbsp of active dry yeast
- 1 Tbsp of sugar
- 3 Tbsp of melted butter
- 3 cups of flour
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
Ingredients for garlic butter topping:
- 4 tbsp of melted butter
- 1 1/2 tsp of garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp of salt
- 1 tsp of Italian seasoning
Directions:
Start by warming up your water to the temperature of between 100-110 degrees. I run warm tap water and measure it with a meat thermometer.
If it’s not the right temperature, I warm it in the microwave for 5 seconds. That’s why I like to use my glass Pyrex measuring cup (affiliate link) whenever I bake with yeast.

To the warm water add the yeast and the sugar. Using a fork or whisk, fully incorporate the ingredients.
Adding the sugar, along with the temperature of the water are key to activating the yeast.
Tightly wrap a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the yeast, sugar, and water mixture.
Let it sit for 5 minutes. This is when the magic happens!

While you wait 5 minutes for the yeast to activate, mix the dry ingredients: flour and salt.
You will see a layer of foamy yeast at the top and some bubbles. Your yeast is ready to work!

To the yeast water, add the melted butter and stir it around to incorporate the butter into the wet ingredients.

Next, add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until all the dry ingredients are incorporated.

Dump the dough out on to a floured countertop and knead 5-10 times, adding flour as needed.
Gently poke the dough. If it bounces back, the dough is ready to rise.

Set the dough back in the bowl, and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise for one hour.

After an hour, take the dough out of the bowl, and roll into a rectangle using a rolling pin on a lightly floured countertop.
I like to set my sheet pan on the counter beside the dough so that I can eyeball the size.

Once the dough is rolled out, cut it into 12 strips. I use a pizza cutter to do this.

Place the breadsticks on the sheet pan and allow to rise for at least 30 more minutes.

After 30 minutes of rising, bake the breadsticks for 14 minutes at 375 degrees. While they are baking, mix together melted butter, garlic powder, salt, and Italian seasoning.
Once the breadsticks come out of the oven, use a pastry brush to apply the butter mixture to the breadsticks.

We usually cut the breadsticks in half and our family of four always has leftover breadsticks for the next few days.
The breadsticks are perfect for any type of Italian dish you are serving.
