Since marrying my husband I have learned how to make several dishes that I never knew how to make growing up, like sweet tea. It wasn’t until I met my husband that I found out people ate gravy over their rice. I thought gravy was only for mashed potatoes! I quickly learned otherwise.
Another food that I never heard of before meeting my husband was sausage balls. They are basically a requirement at any gathering where finger food is served. But we also have them as part of our regular menu rotation here at the house. They are great served with eggs and fruit for breakfast. And they are equally as good for supper! When I make them for the three of us, I cut the recipe in half, and that is plenty for just us. If I am taking them somewhere, I like to put them in the crock-pot on low after they are cooked.
I used to use the Bisquick recipe, but since cutting back on the grocery budget, I quit buying Bisquick and instead use this recipe.
Ingredients Needed in Sausage Balls
Sausage: You will need 1 pound of sausage. Any sausage will do, but our family prefers Jimmy Dean sage sausage. It adds a little kick and extra flavor to the sausage balls.
Flour: You don’t need Bisqiuck for this recipe. Simple flour is all you need.
Cheese: This recipe uses 4 cups of shredded cheese. We like to use shredded medium cheddar cheese, but you could use any flavored cheese your family prefers.
Seasoning: This is totally optional, but I do like to add a teaspoon of season all. Sometimes if I’m in a hurry, I don’t add any seasoning to this recipe, and it still tastes good. You could also simply add salt and pepper.

How to Make Sausage Balls
Stir 2 cups of flour, seasoning, and 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese together. You’ll want to make sure the cheese and flour are distributed evenly.
Then add the pound of sausage. You want to pull the sausage apart and fold the flour and cheese mix in with the sausage. This will take time and some effort. It actually takes me about 5 minutes to fully incorporate all of these ingredients.

If the flour mixture is not blending well with the sausage, add a little bit of water. This will add moisture and allow all of the flour to be incorporated.
Roll the sausage mixture into 1 inch balls and place on ungreased baking pan. I like to use a pan with sides because of the grease that will escape while baking. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

Sausage Ball Recipe
Ingredients:
- 4 cups of shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. seasoning salt
- 1 lb. sausage (We like to use sage flavored.)
Directions:
- Add the cheese, flour and salt to a bowl and stir together.
- Add the sausage to the dry ingredients and use your hands to incorporate all of the flour mixture with the sausage. This will take a few minutes. If you are having a hard time mixing in the dry ingredients, add a little bit of water to help it all stick together.
- Once all ingredients have been mixed well, roll into small balls about an inch wide.
- Place on a non greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

I grew up eating sausage balls, but I’ve never made them without Bisquick. That’s not something on keep on hand either – so I’m glad to have this recipe now! Before I was married, I didn’t make or eat several of the things on our regular rotation like beef stroganoff, swedish meatballs and scalloped potatoes and ham! 🙂
It is funny how different families are when it comes to food! I used to love beef stroganoff growing up. I hope you like this recipe. It is great to have on hand for a simple meal!
Sounds so good -I printed it out and pinned it. We need something different. Sounds easy too…I love easy!
It is easy! I love that it doesn’t take a lot of ingredients. Thank you for pinning, Vickie! I hope your family enjoys it!
I am definitely saving this one! It looks delicious!

Thanks, Iris! I hope you enjoy it.
I’ve see sausage balls a few times and I’m so intrigued but have never made/had them. I wonder if it’s a Southern thing? Either way, these look so, so tasty!
You know, I wonder if they are a southern thing too! Maybe that is why I never heard of them before I moved to the South. They are a pretty tasty meal!
