Homemade Southern Biscuit Recipe: Fluffy and Delicious!

Sharing is caring!

I grew up on boxed and canned biscuits, so I had no idea how to make good, fluffy biscuits for my southern husband.

Southerners love biscuits for every meal of the day! They are a staple in any household.

I used to rely on frozen biscuits, but when cutting our grocery budget, I decided to start making my own biscuits from scratch.

Over the years, I’ve perfected this southern biscuit recipe and I’m sharing all my tips and pictures of each step.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of salt (or 1 and 1/2 teaspoons)
  • 1 stick of cold butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 2 Tablespoons of melted butter

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Add all the dry ingredients to a large bowl and stir together. Flour, salt, and baking powder

Shred a cold stick of butter and add to the dry ingredients. I like to use a shredder, but if you don’t have one, you can cut your butter up into small chunks.

It’s important to use cold butter. Take it directly out of the fridge.

Next, stir together the shredded butter and dry ingredients to create a crumbly mixture. All the butter should be dry and spread throughout the mixture.

See the picture below for an example.

Add one cup of milk to the crumbled mixture. Stir until all flour has been made wet by the milk.

Your dough will be very sticky.

Dust your clean countertop with flour. Also be sure to take off any rings because your hands are about to become a sticky mess.

Trust me! I learned the hard way. 🙂

Then add your dough to the floured countertop.

Sprinkle some flour on top of the biscuit dough. Then fold the dough over on itself about 5-7 times.

If the biscuit dough becomes sticky, add more flour. You want the dough to be dry, but not too dry.

Once the biscuit dough has been folded and is mostly dry, spread it out to about half an inch thick.

Now it’s time to cut your dough. You should be able to get about 9 biscuits from this recipe.

I used the rim of a glass for years, but now I use a biscuit cutter. (my affiliate link) Either one works.

Add your 9 biscuits to a pan. I’m using a glass 9×9 pan, but I’ve also used a cast iron skillet.

If you don’t have a 9×9 inch pan, you can just add your biscuits to a 9x 13 pan and leave half of it empty.

The biscuits should touch. In fact, you may have to squish the biscuits into the pan a little bit.

Place the biscuits in the 450 degree oven for 8 minutes. They will not be done after 8 minutes.

While the biscuits are cooking, melt 2 tablespoons of butter.

Once the 8 minutes are up, pull the biscuits out of the oven. The biscuits should have risen but not be browned yet.

Use a basting brush to brush the melted butter on the top of the biscuits.

Then return the biscuits for 5-8 minutes. You’ll want to check the biscuits and take them out once the tops are browned.

Don’t these biscuits look delicious! My family love these fluffy, layered, buttery biscuits.

We have them at least once a week as breakfast sandwiches, with sausage gravy, or with honey as a side at dinner.

I hope your family enjoys these biscuits too!

    1. It’s the right amount of salt for us. I’ve made this recipe hundreds of times, and it tastes great! You can always adjust the amount of salt to your liking. 🙂

  1. I love this recipe. Thought salt was perfect amount. Other recipes seem to be lacking something. After I made this I knew it was the salt.
