One of the Bible passages I plan to teach my kids this homeschool year is Exodus 20 which includes the 10 commandments.
In Deuteronomy 11:19, God told the Israelites to teach His words to their children as they sat in their houses, when they walked with them, as they went to bed and when they rose in the morning.
In other words, parents were to teach their kids about God’s word whenever possible!
However sometimes I find teaching God’s word to my kids can feel a bit overwhelming. So I’ve decided that this school year, I’ll be teaching some Bible theme passages that they can easily apply.
I plan to do a deeper study on each of these.

- the fruit of the spirit
- the armor of the Lord

So today, let’s list the ten commandments. I’ll use the King James Version for this post, but feel free to use any version you prefer. Personally, I love the NIV.
The 1o Commandments in Order
- Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
- Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
- Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Honour thy father and thy mother.
- Thou shalt not kill.
- Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Thou shalt not steal.
- Thou shalt not bear false witness.
- Thou shalt not covet.
The 10 Commandments in KJV
God gave the 10 commandments to Moses after bringing the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt. They needed to know God’s law and what He expected of them.
COMMANDMENT 1
Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
COMMANDMENT 2
Exodus 20:4-6 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
(5) Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
(6) And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
COMMANDMENT 3
Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
COMMANDMENT 4
Exodus 20:8-11 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
(9) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
(10) But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
(11) For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”
COMMANDMENT 5
Exodus 20:12 “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
COMMANDMENT 6
Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill.”
COMMANDMENT 7
Exodus 20:14 “Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
COMMANDMENT 8
Exodus 20:15 “Thou shalt not steal.”
COMMANDMENT 9
Exodus 20:16 “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
COMMANDMENT 10
Exodus 20:17 “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.”
Why are the 10 commandments important?
In the New Testament, one of the Pharisees asked Jesus which of the commandments was the most important.
Jesus didn’t actually reply with any of the 10 commandments. Instead He said that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
The first 4 commandments are practical ways we can love God.
Then Jesus said the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself.
The last 6 commandments are practical ways we can love others.
I believe it’s important to know the 10 commandments and teach them to our kids, grandchildren, and other children God has placed in our care.
But also remind them that even though God wants us to obey Him, we can never follow His commands perfectly. We all sin.
That’s why Jesus died and rose again to take the punishment for our sins. Salvation doesn’t come through obedience. It only comes through Christ.
Romans 10:9 says, “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

I don’t believe, it’s only when you confess and believe Jesus Christ in your heart alone, that you can get salvation. It is a must, your must obey God’s command and love your neighbor 😳. That is why Christianity is full of crime, when what you preach is “confess Jesus Christ and your salvation is automatic”😳. Infact, something happens to me few months ago, a supposed pastor, I worked for, diabolically took my child’s university documents 😳. After much prayer, God revealed him and untill now, all steps taken, we are yet to retrieve the documents. Do you call that pastor, salvation or what?🥺. Infact because of the incident, I am converting to Muslim 😳 period. Christianity in Nigeria is wickedness and business.
