5 Biblical Truths That Made Me a Better Homemaker

Sharing is caring!

When I was really struggling as a homemaker, I wanted a guidebook to tell me what to do. I didn’t have one, but I did have God’s Word.

So I decided to look to the Bible for truths I could apply to homemaking.

I started seeing how simple verses I knew could apply directly to how I cared for my home and family.

Today I’ll share five of those simple Biblical truths that have literally changed my life and made me a better homemaker.

1. Wake Up Early

Proverbs 31:15 says, “She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household and plan the day’s work.”
Now, I don’t always get up before the sun, but starting the day early—before the house gets busy—helps me prepare my heart and my home.

I used to sleep in until my son woke up, and then drag myself out of bed and slowly get going. But most of the morning was gone before I actually did something with my day.

In fact it was common for me to stay in my pajamas until 10 A.M. or later in the morning. But when I read this verse in Proverbs, I realized I could make a lot better use of my mornings.

Over the past 10 years my mornings have looked different in the different seasons of babies and toddlers to now homeschooling my elementary children.

But the same thing has stayed the same. I go to bed at a decent time the night before in order to get up and start my day.

2. Don’t Be Idle or Lazy

Proverbs 6:6 tells us to “Go to the ant… consider its ways and be wise.”
And Proverbs 13:4 reminds us that “the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.”

Reading those verses really convicting me of my laziness as a homemaker. It was common for me to spend hours scrolling my phone or watching TV.

I’m not going to sugar coat it. It was laziness!

I had to break the habit of idleness and addiction to being in front of a screen. It took time and I plan to share a more detailed video of how I broke that addiction sometime soon.

But just remembering to be wise with the way that I spend my time and to not squander the days God had given me was hugely influential in accomplishing my homemaking tasks and spending more time with my kids.

I’ve learned that homemaking is really about steady, faithful effort.

It’s the little things—like staying on top of laundry every day or making dinner or choosing to clean up each night instead of leaving a dirty kitchen for the morning.

Working diligently means I stay on top of those things in my home. Not perfectly, but faithfully and diligently.

3. Don’t Complain

Philippians 2:14 says, “Do everything without complaining or arguing.”

That one hits home for me. My attitude sets the tone in our home.

When I choose gratitude over grumbling, it changes me—and it changes the atmosphere for everyone else in my home too.

I used to grumble and complain and have the worst attitude about having to make dinner or cleaning the bathrooms – actually, everything!

But I was convicted to stop complaining when I read this verse. And replace the complaining with gratitude. Which bring me to the next biblical truth.

4. Be Thankful in All Things

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances.”

That doesn’t mean homemaking is always easy, but choosing thankfulness reminds me that every ordinary task is still a gift.

Even washing dishes or sweeping floors becomes a blessing when I do it with a thankful heart.

Dinner has to be made whether I want to or not. I might as well choose to be thankful for the food God provided, the family to feed and the ability to prepare the meal in the home He’s given me.

5. Do Your Work With All Your Might

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

This verse shifts my whole perspective. The things we do as homemakers may be small. They often go unnoticed by people. But God says, all of it matters.

We aren’t only serving our families. We are serving and worshiping God though the many things we do.

I’m not just cleaning up messes or cooking meals—I’m serving God through those things. And that makes even the repetitive, unseen tasks feel meaningful.

I love sharing homemaking motivation here on my blog and through my free Simple Homemaker’s Checklist.

I also have a course called The Motivated Homemaker hat has helped so many women go from overwhelmed to motivated and encouraged at home.

These five truths may seem small, but they’ve had a life-changing impact on the way I approach homemaking.

When we live out God’s Word in our homes and focus on Christ and His love for us, even the everyday moments become opportunities to glorify Him.

  1. Thank you so much for this! I’ve always had to work so I’ve never had the joy of being a stay at home Mama. I’m sure it can be overwhelming but embrace it for all of us that aren’t able to have Homemaking as our primary job
