How I Found Purpose in the Mundane of Homemaking

Sharing is caring!

I haven’t always loved homemaking. In fact, for a long time, it felt like a never-ending to-do list.

The dishes, the laundry, the meals every single day- again and again.

But eventually God changed my heart and I stopped treating homemaking like something to just get through. Now I see homemaking as a gift I am called to do.

Early on in my homemaking, I would let the dishes and laundry pile up and by the time I did do them I grumbled and complained the whole time.

Those household chores just felt like a heavy, unrewarding burden.

But one day it finally occurred to me that the dishes and laundry weren’t going anywhere. So I could keep doing them while feeling miserable or I could figure out how to enjoy homemaking.

As I started to embrace homemaking I realized that homemaking isn’t just a list of chores to check off my to do list. And I do love to do lists!

But my heart and attitude had to change. I had to find purpose behind my list of chores.

I didn’t want to just get through scrubbing the shower with gritted teeth. I wanted to do it well.

A Reason for the Chores

I started thinking about the reasons why I do all the things around the house. When I scrub the shower, I’m creating a clean, sanitary place for my family to clean themselves and feel refreshed.

I love the quote from Mother Teresa that says, ”Wash the dishes not because they’re dirty but because you love the people who will use them next.”

I think of that quote often. Because the truth is that homemaking is not just chores. It is really about the people you do those things for.

It makes me think of Proverbs 31:4 “A wise woman builds her home. A foolish one’s tears it down.”

By serving my family with joy and thankfulness, I’m creating a positive atmosphere in my home.

I want my family to know that making our home a safe, comfortable, and stable place is a priority and a privilege for me.

Homemaking is service to the Lord.

I started treating ordinary tasks as ways to serve both my family and God.

Colossians 3:23-24 are verses that really encourage and motivate me.

“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.”

Over time, homemaking became more than my to-do list. It became part of who I am.

Homemaking has become a devoted way of life for me that honors the Lord and serves my family.

Today I want to remind you that your efforts at home matter deeply.

Homemaking matters deeply.

When you go about your tasks, remember that there is so much more to doing them than just checking the chores off your to do list.

You will have more peace and purpose as you serve your family with purpose.

If you’re in a season where homemaking feels more like a burden than a blessing, you’re not alone.

That’s why I created my free Simplified Homemaker’s Checklist. It will help you manage your home with purpose.

So stop just getting through your to-do lists and start living on purpose.
