Easy Homemade Marinara Sauce with Tomato Sauce

Sharing is caring!

I make this marinara sauce all the time, and use it in all our Italian dishes: pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, meatball subs, Stromboli, dipping sauce, and chicken parmesean.

It’s easy and only takes a handful of simple ingredients you probably already have in your pantry.

Usually, there are leftovers, which I freeze and use later.

Ingredients:

  • 29 oz can of tomato sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/8 tsp ground oregano
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar (optional)

Directions:

Empty can of tomato sauce in pot and heat over medium-low.

I use the 29 ounce can which makes a lot of sauce.

I usually have leftovers that I store in freezer bags. It’s nice to have some on hand that I can just pull out of the freezer to use later.

If you want to use a smaller can, just cut the spices in half.

Add all seasonings to the sauce and stir together.

We like a sweeter marinara sauce so I add the sugar.

However, if you are cutting back on sugar, this recipe tastes great without it too.

Taste the sauce for personal preference. You may find that you want a bit more salt or garlic powder.

The nice thing about this recipe is you can add more or less of the spices according to your liking.

Sometimes I add a little dried parsley and a little extra oregano.

Pretty much any Italian seasonings you have on hand will make your sauce delicious: rosemary, oregano, marjoram, thyme, basil, sage.

Allow to simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve with any Italian dish that requires a marinara sauce!

Yield: 29 oz.
