How to Clean a Toaster Without a Crumb Tray

Sharing is caring!

I recently bought a new toaster, and thought it had no crumb tray! That meant there were a ton of crumbs in the bottom of my toaster that I couldn’t get out.

If you are in the same boat, here’s the trick to getting the inside of your toaster clean.

Before we start, get a look at all the crumbs stuck on the bottom of my toaster.

At this point, I had already turned it upside down and dumped out any loose crumbs, but there was plenty that just wouldn’t come out.

How to Clean a Toaster Without a Crumb Tray

1. Unplug the toaster.

Before cleaning any appliance, it’s important to unplug it for your safety. You’ll be sticking a utensil inside your toaster too, so it’s really important that you unplug it.

2. Use a brush to clean out crumbs.

A pastry brush is the key to getting your toaster clean! It is thin enough to get inside the toaster and the bristles will help loosen the crumbs.

My pastry brush was a little too thick to get between the burner coils and sides of the toaster.

I had to push the toaster handle down with one hand while I brushed the bottom layer of crumbs with the pastry brush in the other hand.

If that doesn’t make sense, hopefully the pictures do!

Also, if you don’t have a pastry brush, try a small toothbrush.

3. Shake and/or wipe out remaining loose crumbs.

Once the pastry brush loosened the crumbs on the bottom of the toaster, I was able to dump them into the trash. Then I wiped down the whole toaster with a damp paper towel.

It’s not perfect, but it certainly looks better!

Here is a before and an after of my toaster! It’s so much better.
