If you want to have a productive day as a mom, it starts with a great morning routine. But you might be wondering what to include in your morning. There are so many things that you could choose from, and it may even seem overwhelming.

I’ve been a mom for the last 7 years, and I’ve learned that there are 6 morning habits which make the biggest difference in my daily schedule as a stay at home mom.

When routines are done effectively, they make life easier not more difficult. They allow you the freedom to do those extra things that you want and be spontaneous.

Routines put every day tasks on autopilot and so you get them done and out of the way. Then you don’t have to be burdened with an unclean house or piles and piles of laundry.

I also love following a morning routine as a mom because it makes sure that I practice self care. It’s so easy to take care of every one else in the morning, and skip yourself.

But you can’t do that forever. Eventually, you will wear out. I hope I have talked you into why you need to be intentional with your morning routine especially as a mom!

Now, let’s figure out how to get productive with your mornings!

6 Morning Routine Habits for Moms

1. Wake up before your kids for alone time.

One of the best decisions I made as a mom was to wake up earlier than my kids. When I used to wake up at the same time as them, I would be so tired and even grumpy. It was hard to find the energy to get my kids ready for the day let alone get myslef ready.

But when I started waking up before them, I was able to get myself ready for the day and have some time to wake up and clear my head before meeting the needs of my kids.

As you create your morning routine, the time you wake up really doesn’t matter. You could get up a couple hours before your kids or just 15 minutes. Decide on a time that is early enough to accomplish what you want to do before your kids get up. But don’t plan to get up so early that you won’t be able to stick with it.

2. Get dressed and ready for the day.

If you don’t work outside the home, you may be tempted to stay in sweats all day or not take a shower. But you will feel better and be much more productive if you get yourself showered and dressed and ready.

3. Eat breakfast with your kids.

Do you ever skip breakfast? Try your best to eat something in the morning. That way you aren’t starving midmorning and looking for chocolate. Ha!

It helps to have easy grab-and-go breakfast options. I like to freeze breakfast burritos or muffins and simply serve with fruit.

If at all possible, eating with your kids is a great way to make a connection with them early in the day and fill up their love tanks early in the day.

This may not be an option. You may want to eat breakfast by yourself before you kids wake up, and accomplish something from your to-do list while your kids eat.

4. Clean up the kitchen after breakfast.

After everyone is done eating, take the extra 5 minutes to clean up the kitchen. You’ll set yourself up for an easier day when the dishes are put away and the kitchen counters are cleared off and ready for the day.

5. Start a load of laundry.

Starting a load of laundry early in the morning is a great way to get motivated early in the day. It’s an easy yet productive household task you can accomplish first thing in the day.

I love doing one or two loads of laundry a day in order to stay on top of all the laundry. As a mom, you know the laundry never ends! So staying on top of it every day is a must!

6. Decide on dinner.

One of the worst feelings is not knowing what’d for dinner at 5:00 in the evening! I used to dread meal time, but I’ve learned that one of the best ways to help myself and save my sanity is to make sure I know what’s for dinner early in the day.

I pull out any meat that needs to be defrosted and make sure I have all the other ingredients so I’m prepared for dinner.

Here’s how this morning routine looks with approximate times.

Example Morning Routine with Kids

6:30 Wake up, coffee and spend time with God

6:45 Showered and dressed for the day

7:00 Breakfast with Kids and throw a load in the laundry

7:20 Clean up kitchen and get kids ready for the day

8:00 Check on dinner
