Keeping a clean house doesn’t have to be difficult! In this post, I’m sharing 6 tips for a clean house that will also simplify your life.
You don’t have to know a bunch of special cleaning hacks or even follow a strict cleaning schedule to maintain a clean house. It really boils down to daily habits. As I was thinking through ways that I keep my home clean and tidy, these 6 tips are the ones that first came to mind and will make the biggest impact.
Tips for a Clean House
1. Clear the kitchen counter every day.
Your kitchen is probably the heart of your home, and that means the kitchen counters often collect a lot of stuff. All of the stuff is getting in the way and making your life more difficult. It’s harder to make dinner with a cluttered kitchen.
So instead of letting things clutter up your kitchen counters, be intentional about clearing it off every day.
- sort through mail or paperwork and put it away
- throw trash away immediately
- put things back after using them
- put rarely used appliances in the cupboard
- store food in the pantry

2. Wash the dishes every night.
This ensures that in the morning, you’ll walk into a clean kitchen with an empty sink. You’ll have clean dishes to serve meals and snacks throughout the day. You won’t have to worry about whether or not you have clean dishes.
Washing your dishes every day also means you’ll never have a huge pile of dishes to wash. Keeping the dishes minimal each day is much easier than having to wash days’ or even weeks’ worth of dishes.
3. Keep up with the laundry daily.
I used to advise everyone to wash 1 load of laundry every day, but I’ve found that doesn’t work for every family. So instead, my tip is to simply keep up with the laundry regularly. Don’t wait until the weekend or a designated “laundry day”.
Depending on the size of your family, you may need to do 1 load a day or 2-3. It will all depend on how many clothes your family goes through. In my family of 4, I usually do 1 load of laundry a day, but sometimes that load is towels, sheets, or whites.
Keeping up with the laundry on a daily basis means you’ll never have a mountain of laundry. It’s so much easier to maintain a clean home when you tackle small amounts of laundry at a time.
4. Plan your cleaning tasks each week.
If you don’t plan out your weekly cleaning tasks, you’ll often forget to do them until it’s gotten so bad you can’t put them off any more.
Instead, pick a day to plan out your weekly cleaning tasks. For me, that day is Sunday. I pull out my planner (affiliate link) and write down my weekly cleaning tasks. When they are completed throughout the week, I simply check them off. That way I know exactly what needs to get done and when each task is accomplished.
Here are my weekly cleaning tasks:
- dust
- thorough vacuuming
- mop
- clean the bathrooms
- wash the bed sheets

5. Put things back once you’re done using them.
This is my absolute favorite tips for keeping a clean house, because it has simplified my life so much and it’s really easy to do!
When you finish getting ready in the morning, put everything back where they go. This makes dusting and cleaning easier and it also ensures that you’ll know exactly where it is when you need it the next day.
If you have a hard time remembering to put things back where they belong, start with a small habit. The next time you get out a pen to write something down, remind yourself to put it back where it goes instead of leaving it out on the table.
The next time you take off your shoes, put them directly in the closet instead of leaving them in the living room. It’s these simple daily habits that make a big impact in the tidiness and cleanliness of your house!

6. Assess your things regularly.
Ask yourself regulalry if you need to keep things or not. If you see that something in your home is getting in the way or causing your cleaning to be more difficult, it may be time to get rid of it.
It may simply need to be thrown in the trash, donated, or put in a different area of your home.
If you follow these 6 tips for a clean house, I can guarantee you will have a cleaner home!
